Round cushions are ideal for decoration with thick filling, like the cushions sewn from my Beach Party Panel by Nadine from “bear_op.n.diek” (Nadine’s Instagram account). They can also be used as thin, flat chair pads or with an additional side stripe as floor cushion or pouf.
Anik from “Sie näht” (Anik’s Facebook account) sewed a few of these floor cushions for her class using also my Beach Party cut and sew cushion panel, available from Lillestoff.
The panel has six round motifs marked out, ready to be cut out with a diameter of approximately 45 cm (17.7 in) (finished size) for three cushions. These pieces can be used as the front and back of decorative cushions or chair pads. They can also be sewn together with a wide side stripe to a floor cushion or pouf.
Another option is to use the round pieces as tops for six cushions and cut matching fabric for the bottoms, though this alternative is not discussed in this article.
The amount of fabric required in addition to the cut and sew panel depends on the height of the side stripe.
For three side stripes of approx. 15 cm (5.9 in) height plus seam allowance, you will need approx. 50 cm (19.7 in) of matching fabric with a width of 150 cm (59 in).
Of course, you can make the floor cushions as high as you like, but always calculate the amount of fabric required — the 150 cm (59 in) fabric width is sufficient for a cushion with a finished diameter of 45 cm (17.7 in), so you only need to consider the desired height of the cushions.
The materials required for the floor cushions are:
- 1 cushion panel with round cushions to cut out, e.g. Beach Party cushion panel – ideally woven cotton fabric or canvas
- 50 cm (19.7 in) or 100 cm (39.4 in) of matching fabric for the side stripe, depending on the height and number of cushions – ideally woven cotton fabric or canvas as well, e.g. Pebbles in light blue
- Filling material or fabric remnants for filling
- Matching sewing thread
How to sew the seat cushions?
- Cut out the round cushion pieces.
- Measure three stripes of fabric to the chosen height from the additional fabric and cut the stripes across the entire width of the fabric.
- Pin the two round pieces, right sides together, to the top and bottom edges of one side stripe. Sew the side seam of the stripe a few centimeters from the top and bottom edges. Leave an opening of about 10 cm in the middle of the seam for turning and filling. And then sew the two round pieces to the side stripe with a seam allowance of about 1 cm (0.4 in) (or within the dotted seam lines, if any).
- Turn the cushion inside out and fill it with the chosen filling material.
- Close the turning and filling opening by hand or with a sewing machine.
