Sewing Tips for Cut and Sew Panel Drawstring Bag

Cut and Sew Panel Drawstring Bag / Turnbeutel

Gym bags or drawstring bags are ideal for storing and transporting light items, even for school children. The cut and sew panels are easy to sew and the highlight is the reversible option – one bag with two designs or colour variations.

Drawstring

Materials required for 1 bag:

– 1 cut and sew panel
– 320m cord
– Matching sewing thread
– Iron-on stabilisers in the size of the name tags, approx. 6cm x 3cm each
– Zigzag scissors
– Textile pen

Sewing the bag

Cut out the pieces at the outer edges.

Fold loops in half (wrong sides together), sew longer edge together, turn right side out and topstitch near the edges.

Iron on the stabiliser onto the back of the name tags, trim the edges with the zigzag scissors or zigzag stitch on the sewing machine, write the name on the tag and sew one in any position on an inner and outer piece.

Join the outer and inner pieces at the top edge, right sides together.

Place the bag pieces right sides together (outer bag on outer bag and inner bag on inner bag) and sew a loop between them on each side at the bottom end, about 1 cm from the bottom edge. (If you do not want to sew a reversible bag, you do not need the name tag and the loops in the inner bag).

Sew the bags together along the side edges and bottom edge up to the marking triangle (I like to do this twice so the seam doesn’t tear), leaving a turning opening on one side of the inner!
Cut the small triangular mark under the top edge up to the pattern, press the seam allowances of the outer and inner to the wrong side and topstitch the edge.

Turn the bag inside out, close the opening and topstitch the tunnel for the cord at the top of the bag.

Pull one half of the cord from each side through both tunnels and one loop each and knot the cord.
