In Germany, Austria and Swiss school cones are traditionally taken to elementary school on the very first day of school. They are filled with sweets, small toys and presents.
Self-sewn school cones are a wonderful way to add an additional memory to the many photos of the first day of school. Unlike paper cones, fabric cones can also be used later as cushions in the kids room with a matching inlet or simply stuffed with filling cotton. And with the pre-drawn cone patterns on the cut and sew fabric panels, it is very easy to sew a cone.

Required Materials:
- 1 cut and sew panel with pre-drawn school cone pattern – I would recommend woven fabric
- 1 cardboard school cone with a diameter of approx. 18cm and a height of 70cm
- A ribbon to tie the fabric at the top of at least 80cm
- Sewing thread
- If you want to make a cushion later you can either purchase a matching inlet 18cm in diameter and 70cm high or a bag of filling cotton
How to sew the school cone:
Cut out the two school cone pattern pieces at the outer edges and finish the bottom edge of the trim either with a zigzag or overlock or by folding over the edge (approx. 0.5 cm wide)
Sew the additional lining fabric to the top edge of the school cone, right sides together. Cut in the seam allowances at a distance of approx. 1 cm so that the seam allowance lies nicely into the edge.

To properly fit the fabric to the cardboard school cone, place the fabric around the cardboard with the right side facing in and pin along the seam.

At a distance of approx. 17 cm from the upper seam edge, insert the ribbon folded in half between the seam.
Take the cardboard out of the fabric cone again and close the side seam including the seam of the lining in one go.
Fold the lining inwards and press the top seam edge. You can now sew the lining to the seam allowance with a few hand stitches so that it does not slip out so easily.
Put the cardboard cone back into the fabric cone and the school cone is ready to be filled with all kinds of tasty and useful things for the first school day.

The leftover fabric from the panel can be used to sew a pencil case or small bag.
There is also a matching reversible gym bag for each panel.
Have fun at school!
The links to the school bag panels will follow in April or May as soon as they are available to buy.
